Nicosia is inland, and it has the widest temperature range on the island. In a kitchen that shows up in three places: a west-facing window over a worktop becomes unusable in July without external shading, extraction has to cope with cooking in a sealed, air-conditioned room rather than one with a door open to a sea breeze, and a fridge or wine cabinet placed in an unshaded utility room will run hard and fail early. A designer who has worked in the district will ask which way the room faces before drawing anything. That question is a reasonable screening test.

1. The waste stack does not move

   In blocks from the 1970s to the 1990s the soil and waste positions are fixed in the structure. A sink can usually shift a metre or two; relocating it across the room means falls that either do not work or eat your ceiling height in the flat below. Get this checked before you fall in love with an island.

2. Walls may be structural

   Opening a kitchen into a living room in a concrete-frame block is often possible and is not a decision an interior designer can sign off alone. Drawings that touch structure need certifying by a professional registered with ETEK. Settle who is doing that at the start, not at permit stage.

3. The supply is probably dated

   An original installation was never sized for an induction hob, an oven, a dishwasher and a wine cabinet on the same circuit. Budget for the electrical work as part of the kitchen, because it will happen either way.

4. Access decides delivery

   Older central blocks have small lifts and tight stairwells. Tall units and a single-piece worktop have to physically arrive. A good specification says how, and splits a slab if it has to.

One thing Nicosia does not have is salt in the air. Coastal projects in Limassol and Paphos routinely specify marine-grade hinges, handles and appliance finishes. Inland you do not need that, and you should not be paying for it. If a quote carries a coastal hardware upgrade, ask why.
